My Commonplace Book... Makings of a Pascha Basket: Just CrossStitch April 2022

I get the Just CrossStitch magazine and saw this in the April 2022 edition. I loved reading about the Pascha Basket and Wanted to keep it for my Commonplace Book.

A very ancient custom which “fell by the wayside” among the Greeks as a result of the 400 years of Turkish rule, was the custom of “blessing the family baskets” of Paschal food at Easter. It is still widespread among the Slavic nations who inherited the Orthodox Christian faith and culture from the Byzantine Greeks. ~ stjohndfw

My Commonplace Book... Poem: "The Spacious Firmament on High" by Joseph Addison

I was reading a book by Grace Livingston Hill and came upon this poem. It was a beautiful poem that has been set to music as an Hymn. The poem was written by Joseph Addison.

The Spacious Firmament on high, With all the blue Ethereal Sky, And spangled Heav'ns, a Shining Frame, Their great Original proclaim: Th' unwearied Sun, from day to day, Does his Creator's Pow'r display, And publishes to every Land The Work of an Almighty Hand. Soon as the Evening Shades prevail, The Moon takes up the wondrous Tale, And nightly to the list'ning Earth Repeats the Story of her Birth: Whilst all the Stars that round her burn, And all the Planets, in their turn, Confirm the Tidings as they rowl, And spread the Truth from Pole to Pole. What though, in solemn Silence, all Move round the dark terrestrial Ball? What tho' nor real Voice nor Sound Amid their radiant Orbs be found? In Reason's Ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious Voice, For ever singing, as they shine, The Hand that made us is Divine.

I also found it being sung.

Memorial... John Michael Schlageter (1st birthday in heavenly home)

Just a few short months ago, you went home to your heavenly Father. Daddy misses you and I saw him crying that you had left. Love and miss you, John!

Faith Like That
By: Gordon Mote

I could see his hands were shaking
As he took the microphone
He said my little boys not gone
He's just gone home

Then he opened up his bible
And read from John 14
He said, I'm here to celebrate his life
Not grieve

It hurts how bad I miss him
But what better place to be?
He's with his other Father
Who loves him more than me

I want to have faith like that
Let it be who I am
I want to see the bigger picture
And trust it's in God's hands
I want have faith
I want to faith like that

Well I walked up to him after
Not real sure what to do
I hugged him
But wondered who was hugging who?

Before I could say I'm sorry
He said, It's gonna be alright
And as we stood there
I could almost hear him smile

I thought I could give him comfort
Yeah I thought I believed
I went there for him
But, he was there for me

I want to have faith like that
Let it be who I am
I want to see the bigger picture
And trust it's in God's hands
I want have faith
I want to faith like that

I want to walk the walk
Not just talk the talk
I want to make it who I am

I want have faith
Yea I want to faith like that

My Commonplace Book... God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew

I am currently reading God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew. I came upon the following passage and thought it showed America to a T. Brother Andrew was behind the Iron Curtain in Yugoslavia. Just as they tried to stamp out Christ and Christianity there, America is trying the same!

"I became aware of the slow wearing-down process the government was exerting on Christians. The effort seemed to be centered on the children. Leave the old folks alone, but wean the young people away from the church.

One of the first churches Nikola and I visited was a Roman Catholic one in a small village not far from Zagreb. I noticed that there was not a single person under twenty in the entire congregation, and I asked Nikola about it. In answer he introduced me to a peasant woman who had a ten-year-old son.

"Tell Brother Andrew why Josif is not here," said Nikola.

"Why is my Josif not with me? she asked. Her voice was bitter. "Because I am a peasant woman with no education. The teacher tells my son there is no God. The government tells my son there is no God. They say to my Josif, 'Maybe your Mama tells you differently, but we know better, don't we? You must remember that Mama has no education. We will humor her.' So? My Josif is not with me. I am being humored."

A few days later in another town, we were visiting a Christian family when I saw a little girl playing in the dust outside the house in the middle of the day.

"Why isn't she in school?" I asked Nikola.

From the mother he learned the story. Marta was accostomed to saying grace before meals at home. When it came time for the school lunch, Marta had given thanks aloud as she always did, without even thinking about it. The teacher had been angry. Who had supplied this food, God or the people through their own good government? "That was a wicked thing to say, Marta. You will fill the other children's minds with nonsense."

But the next day, so deeply was the habit ingrained, that Marta did it again, and for this she had been expelled."

My Commonplace Book... Hymn: I Serve a Risen Savior or He Lives

I am going to post favorite Hymns and a little bit about them every Sunday or so.  My first one I posted was "The Old Rugged Cross". Today's song is: "I Serve a Risen Savior or He Lives" by  Alfred Henry Ackley

"Alfred Ackley (1887-1960) showed musical promise at a very young age. His father gave him the benefit of his musical wisdom, and then later sent him to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He played the piano and cello and showed great promise as a composer. After his training in music, Ackley went on to graduate from Westminster Theological Seminary in Maryland, and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He served as pastor in several states of the United States, and worked for a few years with evangelist Billy Sunday and the Rodeheaver Music Company. Ackley's musical endeavors were so appreciated that he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Sacred Music degree by John Brown University in Arkansas."

1.     I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today;
        I know that He is living whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him, He’s always near.
                           Refrain:
                   He lives, He lives,
                   Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me
                   Along life’s narrow way.
                   He lives, He lives,
                   Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
                   He lives within my heart.
2.     In all the world around me I see His loving care,
        And tho’ my heart grows weary I never will despair;
I know that He is leading thro’ all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing will come at last.
3.     Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him, the help of all who find,
None other is so loving, so good and kind.

My Commonplace Book... My favorite Hymn: The Old Rugged Cross

When I was a child, about 3-5 yrs. old, I would go around singing the refrain from "The Old Rugged Cross".  I sang just the refrain, because that was all I knew. lol.  It got to bugging my parents and they told me that if I was going to sing a song, I needed to learn the entire song.  So, they taught me "The Old Rugged Cross".

When perusing the web today, I came upon the following picture:

This made me want to save my favorite song to my commonplace book.
  1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
    The emblem of suff’ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
    Refrain:
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
    Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.
  2. Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
    Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.
  3. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
    A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
    To pardon and sanctify me.
  4. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
    Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.
The Old Rugged Cross | George Bennard

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “[a]Cursed is everyone who hangs on a [b]tree”— Galatians 3:13 NASB

[a] Deuteronomy 21:23
[b] Or cross; lit wood

This and more Hymns can be found here.

Here is a youtube video of it being sung by one of my favorite groups from that same childhood.

Happy Holidays!

Many people become upset at Christmas. They say it wasn't the real date of Christ's birth (it isn't) or they get upset because someone says Happy Holidays! I think that they all are forgetting what it means to be a "Christian".  I celebrate Christmas. I say "Merry Christmas!" but I also say "Happy Holidays", especially before Thanksgiving to signify I am wishing them Happy Holidays (as in Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years).  (Did you know that Happy Holidays is also like saying "Happy Holy Days"?) What is so wrong with that?  Can you really justify all this conflict to JESUS?  Is it being like Jesus when you put someone down?  Not everyone celebrates Christmas. There are the Jewish people who celebrate Chanukah (a holiday that Jesus also celebrated).  There are also groups that don't celebrate any holidays. Paul, in the Bible, had this to say in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 NASB:

19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under [a]the Law, as under [b]the Law though not being myself under [c]the Law, so that I might win those who are under [d]the Law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it. (emphasis mine)
This, I feel, also applies to holidays.  When you put someone down for celebrating Christmas or wishing someone Happy Holidays, you are NOT winning people to Christ.  You are actually making a spectacle of yourself and running people away from Him.

Remember what you are really celebrating on Christmas.  It isn't words but a Savior come to Earth!

So I want to wish all:  Merry Christmas!, Happy Holidays! Happy Chanukah! and Merry MESSIAHmas! to one and all!!!!!!!!!!

One person considers some days
more holy than others,
while someone else regards them
as being all alike.
What is important is for each
to be fully convinced in his own mind.
He who observes a day as special
does so to honor the Lord.
Also he who eats anything,
eats to honor the Lord,
since he gives thanks to God;
likewise the abstainer abstains
to honor the Lord, and he too
gives thanks to God.

My Commonplace Book... Poem: He Had No Servants

He Had No Servants

Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.
He had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.
He had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.
He had no army, yet kings feared Him.
He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, but they crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet *HE LIVES TODAY!

My Commonplace Book... Grocery Gremlins by Mab Graff Hoover

A Rose by any Other Name Would Still Have Aphids by Mab Graff hoover
I am reading a book of devotions. The title is "A Rose by any Other Name Would Still Have Aphids" by Mab Graff Hoover.  The devotion I read today was titled "Grocery Gremlins".  It really spoke to me about our (people) habits of blaming the Devil for our sins.  It reminded me that the Devil does not make us sin and that it is our own hearts that lead to destruction.

The author had gone shopping and came home with items that she could swear she had not picked.  When she tells her family, they laugh at her because apparently she is extremely absentminded.  At the end, Mrs. Hoover says that
"...in my heart I know that these goofs are my own fault. I'm just trying to make excuses for my absentmindedness--just like when I blame the Devil for my sins. Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. James 1:14 ...[and] The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9"
This makes me think, what have I blamed the Devil for in my life that is just due to my old sinful nature trying to butt into my life again?

Birth Verse

I had once found this site and then lost it, but I love the verse they say is my "Birth Verse".

It is:

8 yes, indeed, and I count all things to be loss, because of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, because of whom of the all things I suffered loss, and do count them to be refuse, that Christ I may gain, and be found in him,
Philippians 3:8 (YLT) ~Youngs Literal Translation~
I recommend anyone to go there and find their verse and see what they think.

My Commonplace Book... Poem: What God Sees by Aamalie

I read this on fanfiction.net and kept it because it really touched me. I am unable to find it now. It has disappeared from fanfiction.net and the only author I could find with the name of Aamalie didn't have poems for Christian subjects listed.

What God Sees

When God looks down from heaven,
What does He see?
People overcome with lust, overcome
with greed.

People wearing black, hating the world,
renouncing His name.
People profaning, cursing, crying out
to Him in vain.

Where did the love go, the Lord's
greatest feat?
Into the garbage cans, overflowing
onto the street.

When God listens to prayers, what
does He hear?
People begging for miracles,
shedding false tears.

He shows them the path, with a
hand wise and strong,
yet they refuse His help,
saying He's wrong.

They hold their facade,
saying He's the one
But why then do they
shrug off the teachings of the Son?

They persecute and judge,
based on color of skin.
They take things to eye,
and ignore what's within.

Admitting that God is real is what
they say gives them leave.
But guess again, for the devil
also believes.

In truth, there's but one way
to get to heaven.
Let Jesus into your heart,
then your sins will be forgiven
